Earthquakes beat Red Bulls late

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Rookie Adam Jahn scored his first professional goal and then set up Chris Wondolowski's game-winning penalty in second-half injury time to give the San Jose Earthquakes a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the New York Red Bulls on Sunday night.

Wondolowski scored in the 92nd minute with his second try at the penalty kick, which initially came about when Jahn headed a corner kick into the left arm of New York defender Roy Miller. New York goalkeeper Luis Robles saved the first attempt by Wondolowski, who tied the MLS all-time single-season scoring record last year with 27 goals, but referee Ricardo Salazar awarded San Jose another chance after Miller entered the penalty area too soon.

Given another opportunity, Wondolowski tucked a well-placed shot inside the right post.

Jahn, who came on as a substitute in the 66th minute because forwards Alan Gordon and Steven Lenhart were injured, came up with the equalizer in his second MLS appearance. The Stanford product volleyed home a whipped cross from San Cronin in the 83rd minute, leaving Robles no chance to make a save.

New York had taken the lead through Eric Alexander in the 17th minute, but again could not hold on for new coach Mike Petke's first win. The Red Bulls coughed up a 3-1 halftime lead in Portland last weekend, with an own goal being the capper in an eventual 3-3 tie.

San Jose, which scored a league-best 22 goals in the final 15 minutes of matches last season, floundered offensively for much of the night until substitutes Cordell Cato and Jahn began to make an impact.

Cato drew a free kick in the 80th minute, and forced a diving stop from Robles two minutes later. A minute after that, Ramiro Corrales played Cronin down the left wing, and his cross found Jahn open at the back post.
