Whelan promises Martinez pay rise

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has promised manager Roberto Martinez a pay rise if his side win the FA Cup and stay in the Premier League.

• Jolly: Underdogs have their day
• Blog: Moyes' Boro moment?
• Blog: Rampant Latics into semis

The Latics are in the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the first time in their history after Martinez's side beat Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park.

And Whelan said: "He's always on for a rise and to be honest he is worth it. If at the end of the season Wigan have stayed in the Premier League and won the FA Cup, he is definitely on for a rise."

Owner Whelan believes both Martinez and beaten manager David Moyes are destined to get jobs at major clubs.

He added: "Roberto is in the same league as David Moyes as one of the best managers around. I think both will end up moving to absolutely top European clubs."

Whelan's playing career was ended in the 1960 FA Cup final when he broke his leg playing for Blackburn in their 3-0 defeat to Wolves. And the 76-year-old said he believes Wigan could face his former club at Wembley in the last four.

He said: "I always felt I had unfinished business after what happened to me in the 1960 final, and I had a dream this week that we would beat Everton and then get Blackburn in the semis - who knows, we could fulfil that."

Wigan have a proud tradition of going to Wembley and winning trophies - but not in football. Whelan added: "If we did win the FA Cup it would mean a lot more than winning the Challenge Cup with the rugby league team."
