Bayern rallies twice to beat Fortuna

Bayern Munich twice came from behind before finally getting the better of Fortuna Dusseldorf at the Allianz Arena, 3-2 on Saturday.

Mathis Bolly put the visitors in front in the 16th minute with Thomas Muller replying on the stroke of halftime.

Andreas Lambertz gave the visitors the lead for the second time in the 71st minute, but Franck Ribery equalized almost immediately afterward before Jerome Boateng's first goal for Bayern earned the victory late on.

Fortuna was beaten 5-0 at home to Bayern in the reverse fixture, but coach Norbert Meier said his side would give it all they had Saturday afternoon. That is precisely what they did, going ahead in the 16th minute through Bolly.

He became only the ninth player to beat Manuel Neuer this season when he volleyed past Germany's number one after Lambertz headed the ball into the center for him.

Bayern found itself in a very rare situation of being behind in a game and did not seem to have an answer to begin with.

Fortuna harried and hassled, preventing Bayern from getting its usual slick game going.

It was only a matter of time before Bayern did get into the right gear, though, and on the half-hour mark, Toni Kroos missed the target after Muller had sent a shot over from close range.

Fabian Giefer was getting far more to deal with in the Fortuna goal, and, after denying Daniel van Buyten and seeing a Bastian Schweinsteiger goal ruled out for offside, he was finally beaten just before the interval.

Philipp Lahm teed up Muller, who made no mistake this time with a well-placed shot.

Fortuna did not fall apart and continued to frustrate its hosts before taking a shock lead for the second time.

The ball arrived at Lambertz on the counterattack and he made his way into the penalty area before beating Neuer with a low shot as Fortuna became only the second side after Bayer Leverkusen to put two past Bayern in a Bundesliga game this season.

It clearly stung the Bavarians, who were level again within two minutes.

Ribery found the right-hand corner of the goal from Claudio Pizarro's assist within seconds of the Peruvian entering the fray.

Boateng then headed Bayern in front in the 86th minute as normal business was resumed from Lahm's cross.

The win extended Bayern's lead at the top to 20 points as Borussia Dortmund lost 2-1 at derby rival Schalke.

Julian Draxler got the home team on its way to victory in the 11th minute with Klaas Jan Huntelaar doubling the advantage 10 minutes before the break. The defending champions tried to respond in the second half but only had a Robert Lewandowski consolation goal to show for their efforts.

The win sent Schalke up to fourth, seven points behind their opponents and six below Bayer Leverkusen, which missed the chance to go second by losing 1-0 at Mainz.

Andreas Ivanschitz netted the game's only goal from the penalty spot in the 61st minute to lift the hosts to sixth.

Wolfsburg eased its relegation worries with a thumping 5-2 win at Freiburg.

Max Kruse put Freiburg ahead in the second minute but an own goal from Cedric Makiadi and fine strikes from Vieirinha and Ivica Olic turned the game on its head within 20 minutes.

Olic's second gave Dieter Hecking's side an even more comfortable lead after the break before Johannes Flum scored a second for the home team. Diego added a fifth Wolfsburg goal with the last kick of the game as it opened a nine-point cushion over the relegation zone.

Hoffenheim picked up a crucial victory in the fight against the drop with a 3-0 success at bottom club Greuther Furth.

Roberto Firmino gave Hoffenheim the lead in the 10th minute, Joselu made it 2-0 after 16 minutes and Weis wrapped up the win five minutes into the second half.

The win moved second-bottom Hoffenheim two points off Augsburg in the relegation playoff spot, and five ahead of Furth.

American midfielder Fabian Johnson did not dress for Hoffenheim. According to the Bundesliga's website, Johnson is bothered by a hip injury.

In the late kick-off, Borussia Monchengladbach and Werder Bremen drew 1-1.

Peniel Mlapa gave Monchengladbach the lead in the 72nd minute, but Aleksandar Ignjovski equalized for the visitors five minutes later.

In the second division, American Preston Zimmerman scored the first goal in Darmstadt's 2-0 win at Stuttgart II.

In Austria, American forward Terrence Boyd scored in the 60th minute, starting Rapid Vienna's comeback from a two-goal deficit in a 2-2 tie against visiting Mattersburg. Boyd has 11 league goals this season and 15 in all competitions.
