Villa star wants to avoid drop showdown

Gabriel Agbonlahor has said Aston Villa are prepared for their relegation battle to go to a final-day decider at Wigan but believe they can avoid such a tense scenario.

Agbonlahor is feeling the pain of Villa's struggles at the wrong end of the Premier League table more than many because of his boyhood allegiance to his hometown club.

The attacker said he was keen to avoid the prospect of survival boiling down to the clash at the DW Stadium – and told his team-mates that forthcoming games against Reading and QPR could go a long way towards avoiding the prospect.

But with only ten games remaining, failure to collect points against their relegation rivals would leave their chances in the balance.

"We don't want it to go to the last day - but whatever it takes, then we'll do that. Personally, I am looking at getting results sooner," Agbonlahor said.

"Hopefully, we'll start getting points against the teams around us. The Reading game is a massive game and so is QPR.

"We have games we feel we can win and that's what we have to do – go into every game feeling we can win.

"There will be twists and turns. If you look at the league, there are a lot of teams who are still in it, and if we get a couple of wins we will go up quite a few places.

"I think that if we just concentrate on our own games and go into every game trying to get points, we should be OK."
