Shawcross wants second England chance

Ryan Shawcross fears he faces a major struggle to avoid being left as a one-cap wonder at England level.

• Blog: What might have been

Stoke City defender Shawcross' long-awaited international bow against Sweden last November was a chastening experience at the hands of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Shawcross was badly exposed by the Paris Saint-Germain striker in the 4-2 defeat and was subsequently left out of England's squad for last month's friendly victory over Brazil at Wembley.

The former Manchester United central defender still has ambitions of being part of Roy Hodgson's squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers, but admits he has to raise his own standards to win back his place.

Shawcross also feels he is hampered by not playing for one of the bigger Premier League clubs when it comes to claiming a regular international spot.

"Stoke isn't the most fashionable club so it is harder to get in the England squad, but it has shown in the past that if I am playing well I will get picked. It is ultimately up to me to play well," he said.

"I haven't spoken to Roy Hodgson, but I think that is a standard thing. I want to get back in the squad and the only way I can do that is by performing well for Stoke and hopefully Stoke playing well too.

"It was when we were on that unbeaten run before Christmas that I got called up. It takes the club to do well and me to do well for me to get picked."

Shawcross' chances of a recall have not been helped by Stoke's run of just one win in their last nine games, but he is determined to help Tony Pulis' side end that poor sequence when Stoke travel to Newcastle United on Sunday.
