Marcelo fined for driving without licence

Real Madrid defender Marcelo has been fined €6,000 after Spanish police caught him driving without a licence last month.

Spanish paper AS reported on Wednesday that the Brazil international had been stopped near Madrid's Valdebebas training facility after not giving way correctly at a roundabout.

When officers asked for his driving licence, it was found that it had been withdrawn due to previous offences.

On Thursday, the EFE news agency reported that Marcelo, who has featured little for Madrid recently as he struggles to regain full fitness after injury problems, received the fine on February 18. That has now been confirmed by Spain's court system.

Under Spanish rules, the player, who reportedly earns around €2 million a year, must pay a daily fine of €25 for the next eight months - a total penalty of €6,000.

Last week, Madrid's France international forward Karim Benzema, 25, appeared in court lafter his Audi RS5 4.2 FSI was clocked doing 216kph (134mph) in a 100kph zone in early February.

His trial has been provisionally set for March 26 - the same day as a potentially vital World Cup 2014 qualifier between France and Spain.

El Pais reported last week that midfielder Michael Essien, on loan from Chelsea, had received a €200 fine for driving at 150kph on the same night, February 3, that Benzema was caught.

Neither Madrid nor any of their players have commented.
