Bayern trio waiting for contract talks

Ageing Bayern Munich trio Daniel van Buyten, Claudio Pizarro and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, who are out of contract at the end of this season, are still waiting to hear from the club about renewals.

Earlier this season, Bayern had told Belgian centre-back Van Buyten, 35, who is in his seventh season at the club, a decision about his future was due in late February or early March. But there has still been no movement on extending his stay.

Since the winter break, Van Buyten has featured in six games and has been praised by Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes, who said recently: "Daniel is playing just about the best football of his career."

Since the announcement that Pep Guardiola would join the club in the summer, however, Bayern's plans for next season have changed. The club has repeatedly said that personnel matters will be decided a bit later than usual, which means that Pizarro, 34, also has to wait for a decision to be made, despite Heynckes' claim that "he can become very important for us."

Pizarro, who has played only 20 minutes after the winter break, will see his future decided when it is made clear whether Bayern have plans to bring in Borussia Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski, or recall current Bremen striker Nils Petersen from his loan spell. Petersen has scored 11 goals to become one of the rare highlights at Bremen this season and has already announced that he would like to stay at the club.

Meanwhile Tymoshchuk, 33, looks set to leave Bayern in the summer as the form of Javi Martinez, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Luiz Gustavo in defensive midfield this season has ensured that he has started only one Bundesliga game so far.
