Ronaldo: United fans were unbelievable

Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his gratitude to the Manchester United supporters as he struggled to contain his emotions upon his return to his former side on Tuesday night.

• Delaney: Real take advantage of red
• Jolly: United rocked by Nani red
• Blog: 'The best team lost'
• Blog: Under-par Madrid benefit

Real Madrid, who Ronaldo joined from United for £80 million in 2009, emerged as 3-2 aggregate winners in their last-16 tie against the Premier League leaders.

After the first leg at the Bernabeu ended in a 1-1 draw, United impressed in the return meeting at Old Trafford as they took the lead via Sergio Ramos' own goal.

But a controversial red card for Nani swung the game in Real's favour, before Luka Modric and then Ronaldo struck to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Ronaldo, 28, was given a standing ovation by the United fans before kick-off and thanked them for the reception.

He told Sky Sports: "It was unbelievable, it was an emotional moment for me. I don't have the words to explain what I feel.

"What the supporters do for me made me feel shy because, in my opinion, in both games I didn't play like I play all the time, to a good level. But I helped my team by scoring one goal at home and one away.

"I am happy inside because Madrid got through, but on the other hand I feel a little bit sad because of Manchester United. But it is part of football, and I am wearing the white collar."

Ronaldo was asked about the possibility of a return to the Red Devils in the future, and, while the Portugal international admitted anything is possible, he stressed that he is content at Real.

"In the future, you never know," he said. "The supporters and the club, it is massive. You never know, but I am very happy at Real Madrid and I want to be there.

"We have had an unbelievable week, winning both games against Barcelona and then beating Manchester United. We are in good shape and we want to carry on like that because we want to win this competition."
