Sammer wary of Bayern distractions

Bayern Munich general manager Matthias Sammer has urged the club to put the focus back on football.

• Blog: Bayern survive Hoffenheim

Despite positive results on the pitch, including a [German Cup] quarter-final win over Borussia Dortmund, Bayern have been the subject of several off-the-field discussions.

Last week, Bild ran a story on a secret meeting with Pep Guardiola, while Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski continues to be linked with a summer move to the Allianz Arena.

But Sammer said after Bayern's 1-0 over Hoffenheim at the weekend: "We talk too much, we must be more disciplined as a club."

Speaking on Sunday, Sammer said it was finally time to put the emphasis on "the here and now", and on Tuesday he explained why the club needed to act.

"I was talking to television stations ahead of the Hoffenheim game. The interviews were about everything, but not about the game. That was my 'aha moment'," Sammer told Bild.

"The transfer rumours, the stories on our new coach or other distractions will increase. We need to bounce back from all those things and not allow them to become an issue.

"We must only concentrate on our performance on the pitch - and should only talk about this. It is no coincidence we are where we are right now. But we must continue to be target-oriented - otherwise I see the danger we can be thrown from the path we have taken."

Bayern hold a comfortable 17-point cushion at the top of the Bundesliga table, have reached the semi-finals of the German cup and look set for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals after their 3-1 first-leg win over Arsenal.
