Fergie wants 'best refereeing performance'

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping for "the best refereeing performance" when Manchester United take on Real Madrid at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

• Mourinho: Real will attack United
• Hunter: Real must peak
• Fergie doesn't fear Ronaldo

Ferguson's men have played under referee Cuneyt Cakir twice, but have not won on either occasion - losing last season's Europa League clash with Athletic Bilbao after a Champions League draw with Benfica.

Jose Mourinho criticised the Turkish whistle-blower after he disallowed a goal in a 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund in December, and Ferguson is hoping that controversial decisions do not dominate the high-profile Champions League match.

"You hope in a game of this nature that you are going to get the best refereeing performance, on the same level as the players on the pitch.

"Mistakes will be made by players and the referee but you hope it will be a top performance. You hope to get nothing less than the best. An occasion like this deserves that," said Ferguson.

Meanwhile, Nemanja Vidic says Real Madrid will struggle to create chances against the tactics of the United defence.

"When they play against teams who drop deep, they can have a bit of trouble because Real aren't a team that crosses the ball a lot," he told The Sun.

"If you get players behind the ball, it is difficult for them to get through and they have to shoot from distance because they don't have many crosses.

"They don't have many alternatives. They have Ronaldo, who can jump when he is in the box but he's the only one. I don't think the other players are good in the air."
