Bendtner banned from Denmark team

Nicklas Bendtner has been banned from the Denmark national team for six months after it was confirmed that he would be charged with drink driving in Copenhagen.

The Arsenal striker, currently on loan at Juventus, has been urged by the Danish FA (DBU) to "think long and hard" about his future with the national side.

The DBU announced the punishment in a statement released soon after it was confirmed that Bendtner, 25, would be charged for what he had described as "a mild case of drink-driving".

Denmark's Ekstra Bladet newspaper reported that the forward faces losing his licence and could be hit with a heavy fine.

The DBU statement said: "DBU respects every player's right to a private life, but we still have some rules and expectations about how players on the national team behave in public.

"The behaviour of players on the national team should, at a minimum, abide by society's rules."

Bendtner, currently sidelined by injury, can be re-integrated into the national set-up after the ban has elapsed and once coach Morten Olsen believes he is ready.

He will miss World Cup qualifying matches against the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Armenia.

Bendtner was allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road when caught on Saturday, and later took to his Twitter account to apologise for his actions.

He wrote: "Dear friends, I was booked for a mild case of drink driving last night. It was a quiet night but I am very very sorry to all my friends and fans.

"It is not OK to drink and drive. I take full responsibility."

Bendtner has failed to score for the Bianconeri in nine appearances. He is set to return to the Emirates Stadium at the end of the season.
