Bayern chief confident of Treble success

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge believes the club can claim a treble trophy haul by landing the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League titles this season.

• Blog: Exhausted Bayern survive

Another weekend brought another victory for the Bundesliga leaders as they maintained their 100% record since the winter break, and they have now won their last 10 competitive games.

With only 10 league games to go, they have maintained their 17-point lead over Borussia Dortmund, while a 1-0 win over Dortmund last Wednesday secured a place in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals.

In the Champions League, Bayern have all but qualified for the quarter-finals following their 3-1 win at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium a fortnight ago.

"We are optimistic and hopeful to win the league holding such a lead. But, doing the maths, we have neither won the league nor the cup," Rummenigge said. "We will treat our next games with the utmost respect.

"Dortmund will remain our biggest rival for a long time. They have good management, a good coach and good team. Maybe we will meet again in the Champions League."

After twice losing in the Champions League final in the past three years, Bayern are among the favourites to win this year's crown.

"Uli Hoeness believes we will win the Champions League within the next five years, and I also believe we have this chance," Rummenigge said.

"Maybe we are ready for it this year. I'd wish that for Jupp [Heynckes, who is in his last months as Bayern boss].

"Even if he wins the Treble, we would only have luxury problems.

"I am absolutely delighted about every title FC Bayern has. I don't wish for an early Champions League exit because that title would still be there for Guardiola to take. That would be nonsense. The pressure on Guardiola will be immense anyhow, but he is relaxed about it."

Rummenigge and Bayern general manager Hoeness met Guardiola at a Zurich hotel last week to discuss the next pre-season and the coaching staff for 2013-2014.

Elsewhere, former Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn told kicker the current Munich team is the best he has seen since the 1990s.

"I played for this club for 14 years, but I can't remember dominating like this," he said.

"Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm have now reached their best age as footballers.

"It could be a very interesting era. Muller, Kroos, Alaba and a few more are still very young. Two years ago, I predicted that Dortmund had made Bayern even stronger. Now the league might become a bit boring."

Kahn also said he believed Bayern could complete a Treble, adding: "They certainly have the possibility of winning all three titles. Barcelona are in trouble, and Bayern can beat all the other teams in Europe."
