Mexico tops U.S. for CONCACAF U-20 title

Mexico scored twice in extra time to beat the United States 3-1 and win the CONCACAF Under 20 Championship final on Sunday night in Puebla.

Julio Gomez scored on a bicycle kick from a corner to give Mexico the lead 10 minutes into extra time, and Jorge Espericueta scored a penalty with seven minutes to play to finish off the Americans.

Jesus Corona opened the scoring in the fourth minute, only to see the U.S. earn a penalty in the 10th minute. Benji Joya stepped up to equalize from the spot.

Mexico outshot the United States 22 to 14 and put 11 shots on goal to five for the U.S.

Both teams qualified last week for this summer's Under 20 World Cup by reaching the semifinals.

In the third-place game earlier Sunday, El Salvador beat Cuba 1-0.
