Western Sydney take top spot

Western Sydney Wanderers surged to the top of the A-League as they knocked Central Coast Mariners off the summit with a 1-0 win on Saturday night.

An 81st-minute goal from Labinot Haliti ensured the Wanderers became the first team to beat the Mariners on home turf this season and put the new boys in first place - a spot the Mariners had occupied for 14 straight weeks.

The win also saw them equal Melbourne Victory's all-time longest winning streak of eight straight triumphs.

Earlier, Brisbane Roar claimed a valuable 1-0 away victory over Adelaide United.

Brisbane dominated the best scoring chances in the match, but a the Roar were continually denied by goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic, the frame of the goal and some poor finishing, but substitute Ben Halloran came to the visitor's rescue, expertly firing past Galekovi in the 83rd minute.

United's Osama Malik was shown a straight red card in the dying minutes after his last-man challenge denied Halloran a goal scoring attempt.

Alessandro Del Piero produced a 27-metre wonderstrike but it was not enough as Sydney FC crashed to a 2-1 defeat to strugglers Perth Glory at nib Stadium.

Glory goalkeeper Danny Vukovic could only watch on in amazement as Del Piero produced a trademark thunderbolt in the 28th minute to level the score at 1-1 following Chris Harold's earlier strike, but Shane Smeltz's 34th-minute volley was enough for Perth to secure all three points, lifting the Glory back within three points of sixth spot.

Sydney, who ended the match with ten men after Fabio received his second yellow card of the night in the 56th minute, face a major battle to secure a finals spot following back-to-back losses.
