Tiago Mendes facing lay-off

Atletico Madrid's Tiago Mendes is to miss up to six weeks after a bone in his forearm was broken by a kick from Sevilla's Gary Medel during Wednesday's feisty Copa del Rey clash.

Tiago had to be substituted before half-time during the game at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan, which ended 2-2 and saw Los Colchoneros through to May's final 4-3 on aggregate, and underwent surgery in Madrid on Thursday.

The former Chelsea midfielder told Atletico's official club website about the incident from his hospital bed.

"In the move I got there ahead of Medel," Tiago said. "He was going to clear the ball and to protect my face I put up my arm. I felt something bad had happened because it was hurting a lot. I tried to keep playing, but I realised that I could not continue. I had a broken bone and I felt all the movement in my arm."

Medel escaped a booking for that challenge, but was sent off late in the game after a foul on Atletico's Diego Costa. The Chilean international was followed soon afterwards by fellow Sevilla midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, who was shown a straight red after stamping on Costa after the two had tangled when chasing a long ball.

On Thursday Spain's Competition Committee gave French youngster Kondogbia a four game ban [to be served in La Liga] and Medel three games [served in the Copa], based on the report of referee Fernando Teixeira Vitienes.

"In the 89th minute the player Geoffrey Kondogbia was sent off for the following reason: stamping on an opponent [Costa], in the groin region, when the other found himself on the ground, during a break in play," Teixeira Vitienes' report said. "This player had to receive medical attention and could not return for the end of the game."

The length of Medel's ban is also due to his reaction to being sent off, when 'the pitbull' had to be persuaded to leave the field by team-mates, and then kicked over a plastic chair on his way to the tunnel.

"Having been sent off he approached me protesting in a loud voice and with a menacing attitude," wrote Teixeira Vitienes. "He had to be taken away by his team-mates."

Sevilla say they will appeal the Kondogbia decision.
