Hamburg's Son rejects new deal

Hamburg attacker Heung-Min Son has turned down the offer of a three-year contract worth €2.8 million a year, Die Welt has reported.

Heung-Min Son
Son's form has made him a sought-after player

The paper said Son, 20, has attracted the interest of numerous clubs thanks to nine goals in 22 games this season. His contract expires next year, and club officials are keen to sort out a new deal.

But Die Welt quoted the player’s agent Thies Bliemeister as saying: “We are under no pressure from HSV.

“Everything has to fit. We have clear ideas, and first of all they centre on Son’s development. If his development is right, he will earn enough anyway.”

The player has been linked with a move to the Premier League or another Bundesliga club. According to recent media reports, Arsenal, Tottenham, Leverkusen and Dortmund are among those interested.

“There have been loose enquiries,” Bliemeister said. “But we are talking to Hamburg right now, and those talks are good.”

With Hamburg sixth in the Bundesliga, Son appears happy but is reportedly keen to know more about the club’s plans for the future before signing a new deal.

“The boss puts trust in me and I play in great team,” he said. “I can learn a lot here. There are many players helping me.”

And his manager Torsten Fink said: “Sonni has developed great. He is at club that suits him - I’d be delighted to have him here in the future.”

The South Korean is an important economic factor for the club, Die Welt says, with his presence helping bring in more than €1.5 million a year from South Korean sponsors.
