Earnshaw close to sealing Toronto move

Cardiff striker Rob Earnshaw is hoping to complete a move to MLS side Toronto FC ‘within the next 24 hours’ according to his agent.

Earnshaw is in Israel on a year-long loan from Cardiff
Rob Earnshaw is the next man to move to the MLS

Earnshaw, 31, began his career with Cardiff and, after spells with the likes of West Brom, Norwich, Derby and Nottingham Forest, he returned to the club in 2011 but spent the first half of this season on loan in Israel with Maccabi Tel-Aviv.

Deemed surplus to requirements by manager Malky Mackay, he announced in January that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Speaking to ESPN, Earnshaw’s agent, David Baldwin said: “The deal isn’t complete yet. We’re currently in Toronto and hope to have everything concluded within the next 24 hours.”

That followed a series of tweets from the Welsh international confirming his departure from the Bluebirds.

“Breaking news: I have now signed and officially a @Torontofc Player [sic],” he said via his official Twitter page. “Season starts this Saturday. Now on the plane flying to Vancouver for the opening game. I want to thank my home town club Cardiff City,I had the best fun playing in front of those Fans from the age of 16 until now. I leave with a heavy heart from Cardiff city. I hope we created memories and I tried to give everything I had when I played. I will remember the journey that we went through.”

Speaking at a press conference to announce the retirement of midfielder Torsten Frings, Toronto FC general manager Kevin Payne confirmed that the club had invited Earnshaw to hold talks. With the terms of his deal likely to be undisclosed, Earnshaw may make his MLS debut on Saturday when Toronto travel to face Vancouver at BC Place.

A Welsh international with nearly 60 caps for his country, Earnshaw made his debut for Cardiff in 1998 and scored almost 90 goals for the club.
