Motherwell move into second

Motherwell have consolidated second place in the Scottish Premier League with a 2-1 win over leaders Celtic at the Fir Park Stadium.

The home side took a 1-0 lead into the break when Chris Humphrey latched onto Nicky Law's wide shot at the far post to bury the ball from close range.

A lapse in concentration by Darren Randolph allowed Georgios Samaras to head home at the near post and equalise for Celtic, after the Motherwell keeper raced off his line and misjudged the ball.

But victory was assured less than 10 minutes later, with Law making a bursting run and cross down the left side which was volleyed in comfortably by Michael Higdon.

Motherwell's victory saw Inverness slip to third after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Dundee United.

Inverness were unable to replicate the convincing peformance against Hearts on the weekend and were cancelled out by a stubborn United defence.

Jon Daly spurned United's best chance of the match when he headed Willo Flood's cross wide from close range. The resilience of goalkeepers Ryan Esson and Radoslaw Cierzniak keeping attackers on both sides at bay.

Hibernian twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with Kilmarnock, preventing the visitors from leaping them into sixth place.

Sammy Clingan gave Kilmarnock the lead shortly after half-time and they looked certain to take the three points before a late flurry which yielded three goals in four minutes.

Hibs equalised through Ryan McGivern on 85 minutes with a powerful header into the far corner, but celebrations were short lived as Jude Winchester curled an inch-perfect shot beyond Ben Williams.

The home crowd were then sent into raptures as Leigh Griffiths latched onto the end of a Eoin Doyle rebound in the 88th minute to complete the well-deserved draw.

Bottom-of-the-table Dundee were also forced to claw back twice in a 2-2 draw with St Johnstone.

Interim boss John Brown had something to cheer about in his first match at the helm, but his charges provided some tense moments, allowing Steven MacLean to give St Johnstone the lead on 36 minutes with a close range header after Robert Douglas spilled Paddy Cregg's 25-yard drive.

John Baird made things level before the interval with a header at the back post, but St Johnstone once again grabbed the ascendency as Dave MacKay send a powerful free-kick into the Dundee goal.

A last-minute Mark Stewart strike gave the home fans something to cheer about, although the point was not enough to give Dundee hope of emerging from the foot of the ladder.

St Mirren raced away to a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Hearts which allowed them to move within ten points of a Europa League place.

Paul McGowan's fourth-minute penalty put the Saints in control before Graham Carey lobbed a 25-yard shot over a helpless Jamie MacDonald to seal the win.
