Lens banned for sparking brawl

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) have handed PSV Eindhoven striker Jeremain Lens a three-match ban after starting a fight in the tunnel with Joris Mathijsen following a league match against Feyenoord on Sunday.

The pair, international team-mates for Netherlands, first clashed on the pitch during Feyenoord's 2-1 win against the Eredivisie leaders. Lens, however, was keen to continue the argument, waiting for Mathijsen outside the dressing room before grabbing his shirt in an aggressive manner.

Lens, who has nine caps for his country, has since taken full responsibility for the altercation.

"There were several incidents during the match but I should not have waited for him outside the dressings rooms," he said.

Other players and officials from both clubs were involved in the brawl but the KNVB prosecutor ruled they had been trying to restore order.

"It got several other people involved and they tried to control the situation," Lens added.

The striker will miss the KNVB Cup semi-final against PEC Zwolle for picking up his fifth yellow card of the season in the Feyenoord game, before missing a further three matches for his latest suspension.

Lens was also handed an undisclosed fine by PSV for his behaviour.

"He should have used his aggression on the pitch," manager Ronald Koeman said.

PSV remain two points clear of Ajax at the top of the Eredivisie, following the Feyenoord defeat and Ajax's draw at Ado Den Haag.
