Martinez: Bayern out for revenge

Javi Martinez believes Wednesday's DFB-Pokal quarter-final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund has a "revenge feel to it".

Bayern and Dortmund squared up against each other for last season's final - a game Dortmund won 5-2 to secure the league and cup double.

Martinez, 24, was still an Athletic Bilbao player at that point, but he says his new team are determined to make up for last year's failure.

"I saw highlights of the match on TV," Martinez told the club's official website. "This rematch does have a little bit of a revenge feel to it. It's an additional boost to our motivation."

Despite Bayern currently running away with the Bundesliga title, the €40 million signing was keen to stress that the club will have a lot of work to do in order to come out on top on Wednesday.

"Dortmund are very strong, with top players like [Robert] Lewandowski, [Marco] Reus and [Mario] Gotze, who are incredibly dangerous," he said.

Martinez has so far featured in one match against Dortmund - the 1-1 league draw in early December.

"It was a good encounter and very intense," he said. "I'm expecting the same in the cup quarter-final, although there's even more pressure because it's a knockout match. But we are ready."

The former Athletic man has been one of the key players for Bayern since the winter break and scored his second Bundesliga goal in the 6-1 win over Werder Bremen at the weekend.

"We were hoping Martinez would really get going after a full preparation phase," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. "And it's proved the case. As we can now see, he's exceptionally valuable to the club when he's physically fit."

Martinez echoed Rummenigge's statement, adding: "Unlike the summer, I had a two-week vacation over Christmas, more time off than I've had in years. It did me the world of good and I think I can be even better in the second half of the season."

The Spain international will play alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger on Wednesday in defensive midfield, with manager Jupp Heynckes having the majority of his players to choose from. Only the suspended Franck Ribery and long-time absentee Holger Badstuber are unavailable.

Bayern general manager Matthias Sammer and Rummenigge, meanwhile, met future boss Pep Guardiola in a Zurich hotel on Tuesday, Bild reports.

The paper understands that the trio discussed personnel issues for the next season and believes the question of whether to sign Dortmund striker Lewandowski for next season was raised.
