Weimann: I haven't rejected new contract

Andreas Weimann has said he is happy at Aston Villa and denied reports suggesting he had rejected the offer of a new contract.

Weimann, 21, has been one of the brightest contributors in what has been a difficult season for the Midlands club, scoring ten goals.

Reports suggested that talks over a new deal had ground to a halt, but the Austria international took to Twitter to say he had not rejected a contract and stress that discussions were still going on.

• Hughes: The importance of keeping Weimann

"The reports in the papers about rejecting the contract are not true," he wrote. "I've always been happy here, and talks are still ongoing."

Weimann, who came through the Villa ranks, has been a key figure for manager Paul Lambert, who earlier said he remained hopeful that the contract situation could be resolved.

The forward has less than 18 months to run on his existing contract, worth a reported £15,000-a-week, but was reported to have turned down what his representatives claimed was a "disappointing" offer.

Lambert said: "It would be great for the long term if Andreas signs. We're still talking at the minute, so we'll see what happens there.

"The way he conducts himself on the pitch and in training is excellent. He has been really on top of his game and taken his chance in the first team."

Weimann had struggled to make an impact with former Villa managers Alex McLeish and Gerrard Houllier, but he has flourished this season under Lambert's policy of introducing younger players.
