Inter fined for Balotelli abuse

Inter Milan have been fined €50,000 for their fans' abuse of AC Milan's Mario Balotelli during their Serie A game on Sunday evening.

Former Inter striker Balotelli was playing against the Nerazzurri for the first time since leaving the club for Manchester City in 2010, making him a target for the club's fans.

Following a meeting on Tuesday the Serie A disciplinary council ruled that the 22-year-old was subjected to "racially discriminatory chants".

Reports in the Italian press claimed that inflatable bananas were waved at Balotelli by Inter fans, while in the second half of the game the Italy international was seen to raise his finger to his lips in their direction.

A statement published on Gazzetta.it confirmed that Balotelli has also been fined 10,000 euros (£8,600) for directing a vulgar gesture at the Inter fans when leaving the pitch at the final whistle, with Milan receiving a 10,000 euro fine for unveiling "insulting banners".

Balotelli has been an instant success since returning to Italy in the January transfer window, scoring four goals in four games as the Rossoneri have leapfrogged their city rivals into third place and a pole position for Champions League qualification.

Inter were recently fined €20,000 (£13,200) when a section of fans were heard singing racist songs about Balotelli during a Serie A match against Chievo.

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
