Clint Dempsey to miss 1-2 weeks

Tottenham Hotspur coach Andre Villas-Boas doesn't expect injured U.S. national team star Clint Dempsey to be sidelined for long.

The 29-year-old Dempsey, who has scored five goals in 21 Premier League games for Tottenham this season after moving from London rival Fulham last August, missed Spurs' 3-2 win over West Ham on Monday with a calf strain, according to Villas-Boas.

"I think he will be out maybe one week or two weeks," Villas-Boas said when asked about Dempsey's status after the game, a member the club's press office told ESPN The Magazine on Monday night.

If that timeline is accurate, Dempsey, a two-time World Cup veteran who turns 30 on March 9, would return to action with Spurs in early to mid-March, making him available for selection to U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann's roster for a pair of difficult 2014 World Cup qualifying matches next month.

The U.S., which lost its opening match of the final round of qualifying in Honduras on Feb. 6, hosts Costa Rica in Commerce City, Colo., on March 22 and plays at Mexico four days later, and it will be without all-time leading scorer Landon Donovan for both games. Donovan, who plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy, is on an extended leave of absence following the 2012 MLS season.
