Reyes: Copa can rescue Sevilla's season

Jose Antonio Reyes says Sevilla can save their season by seeing off Atletico Madrid in Wednesday's Copa del Rey semi-final at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan.

• Hunter: Jose's Copa coup de grace?

Sevilla struggled earlier this term under former coach Michel, but have hit form in recent weeks under new boss Unai Emery.

They are now 90 minutes from a place in May's decider against either Barcelona or Real Madrid, although Atletico's 2-1 win in last month's first leg makes Diego Simeone's side slight favourites to progress.

Reyes, the much-travelled former Spain international, told Monday's AS that he could see himself scoring on Wednesday against one of his former clubs to seal the final spot, which would also bring qualification for next season's Europa League.

"For me it would be something beautiful," Reyes said. "I hope that it goes like that and we can play in a final this year. That would fulfill our objective of playing in Europe next year. It would be a very important step for this dressing-room, the saving of our season."

Sevilla youth product Reyes left for Arsenal in 2004 for around £18 million. He won the Premier League and FA Cup with the Gunners, before going on to claim a La Liga title with Real Madrid and the Europa League with Atletico, returning to the Pizjuan for €3.5 million in January 2012.

While yet to win a medal in either of his spells in Sevilla, Reyes feels this could be their year.

"We are very close if we can comeback on Wednesday against Atletico," he said. "Then, in one game, anything can happen. I am not going to have to wait: it will be this time, I am sure of it.

"Keeping them from scoring, and getting a quick goal ourselves can set us up to go through," he said. "That is the key to making the final."
