Inter may be fined over Balotelli 'abuse'

Serie A officials will meet on Tuesday to discuss sanctions against Inter Milan following allegations of racial abuse being directed at AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli at the weekend.

• Blog: Opportunity lost for Milan

Balotelli was always likely to be the target of abuse from the Inter fans during Sunday's 1-1 draw in the Milan derby at San Siro, having previously played for them before joining Manchester City in 2010, but some reports suggest he was the subject of abuse of a more sinister nature.

It was reported that inflatable bananas were waved at Balotelli by Inter supporters but the striker responded by putting a finger to his lips. If found guilty, the club will face a fine of £12,300 (€15,000).

This could be the second time Inter face a fine for this charge following racist chanting about Balotelli during a game against Chievo earlier this month. Inter president Massimo Moratti apologised on that occasion and expressed his hopes that there would not be a repeat at the derby.

A Serie A official said the disciplinary council would discuss incidents at the San Siro, among other events from the division, at a meeting in Milan on Tuesday afternoon.

Balotelli's agent Mino Raiola said his client had been carrying a high fever and did well to complete 90 minutes regardless of the Inter fans' behavior.

Raiola told radio station GrParlamento: "He didn't score but everything else went well. He was really relaxed and calm. Because of the fever he was perhaps lacking about two per cent of his usual freshness.

"What mark would I give him out of ten? If he'd scored then ten but for what I saw, with the level of concentration he maintained – for me it was a nine."
