Leverkusen offer skipper new contract

Bayer Leverkusen have offered skipper Simon Rolfes a new contract, the club's general manager Rudi Voller has confirmed.

Voller told Sky the club now had to wait for the 31-year-old Germany international, whose current deal expires in the summer, to decide whether he wanted to stay.

"It is up to him now," he said at half-time in Leverkusen's goalless draw away to Greuther Furth. Earlier this year, the player said he could see himself ending his career at Leverkusen.

Rolfes joined the club from Alemannia Aachen in 2005 and has made over 200 appearances.

Leverkusen's aim is to secure a return to Champions League, and three points away to Furth - who are bottom of the table - would have moved them up to second place.

"At the end of the day, this is disappointing," Leverkusen boss Sascha Lewandowski said. "We had to perform differently here and come out on top."

Leverkusen, who crashed out of the Europa League to Benfica during the week, take on Stuttgart at the Leverkusen-Arena next weekend.
