Allegri regrets not killing game off

AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri said he was pleased with his side's performance in the 1-1 draw with Inter Milan but feels they had the chances to kill the game off.

The Rossoneri dominated the first half and took the lead through Stephan El Shaarawy's strike. However, Inter Milan came back fighting and were rewarded when Ezequiel Schelotto scored an equaliser after coming off the bench.

"I am not angry. I'm happy with what the team did, an excellent first half with many scoring opportunities," Allegri told Sky Sport Italia. "Despite dropping a little in intensity after the break, we limited Inter and Christian Abbiati made one good save. We should've controlled possession better to make Inter run after us, as we ended up doing things that we shouldn't in a game like this. In the first half Inter couldn't get near us and we should've been better with them being tired after the break, but we didn't.

"Schelotto did well and it was a good Yuto Nagatomo cross. We need to score goals when we get the opportunities, because we cannot expect to have the game in hand for the entire 90 minutes. We have to take our chances better. I think the team remains in good shape and this was an 'away' game against Inter. It's a shame, as we should've won, but then we beat Udinese during the 92nd minute when we deserved a draw, so that is football.

"When a match is hanging by a thread, you have to kill it off. Possession is crucial when you are in control of a game, but we gave the ball away too many times tonight. I complimented the lads after the game, as they put in a good performance and the pressure to win was on Inter as the 'home' side, not us."

Inter boss Andrea Stramaccioni was equally content with the outcome of the match, insisting a draw was a fair result.

"Overall it was the right result. Milan had a great first half and put us under pressure, but Inter came out with a different attitude and spirit. I think we ended on more of a high than Milan, as they were suffering towards the finish," he said. "Thanks also to the saves of Samir Handanovic, the draw was the right result."

Stramaccioni added: "I will admit that in the first half Milan probably went closer to another goal than we did an equaliser. We didn't start that badly, as until the goal Milan were troubling us on the flanks - which we expected - but we were in there. The goal came from a lost ball in midfield and we lost our way a little bit. There are moments like that in a game, but at half-time we were able to re-organise and settle to get it back on track."
