Elliott resigns from FA

Paul Elliott has resigned from all his roles within the Football Association, it has been confirmed.

Elliott was caught in controversy this week following a conversation with former Charlton defender Richard Rufus in which he made discriminatory and abusive comments.

Former Chelsea, Celtic and Aston Villa defender Elliott, 48, was a member of the FA's Judicial Panel and a nominated member of UEFA committees. He has also left his role within anti-racism organisation Kick It Out.

He was awarded an MBE in 2003 for his work with young players and his involvement with anti-racism initiatives in football and a CBE in 2013.

FA chairman David Bernstein said: "I wish to thank Paul for his dedicated and unstinting work, particularly in the area of anti-racism. I am saddened by this turn of events and it is with regret that we accept Paul's resignation.

"However, the use of discriminatory language is unacceptable regardless of its context and in effect has made Paul's position untenable."
