Burkinabe star Kabore in Russia move

Kuban Krasnodar have reinforced their Russian Premier League push with the signing of Burkina Faso’s African Nations Cup captain Charles Kabore from Marseille.

Kabore, 25, passed a medical in the Turkish city of Antalya where his new club, currently fourth in the Russian top flight, are preparing for the resumption of their season on March 10. He then completed his €1 million move by signing a four-and-a-half year contract, L'Equipe reports.

"I'll never forget the OM fans. I'll continue to support the team. It'll always be the club in my heart. I wish them all the best," Kabore told RMC radio in France. "I leave with a happy heart. One day, I'll be able to say to my grandchildren, 'I was lucky enough to have played at a big club like OM'.

“I've played alongside some great players, won titles and known some wonderful fans. I've nothing else to say other than to thank OM for everything that's happened. The people of Marseille adopted me. They took me in as if I were their child. Since then, I've grown. I'm taking another path. I now have to fight for my place."

Bought for under €500,000 from amateur side Libourne Saint-Seurin in December 2007, Kabore played 195 games for OM and was part of the squad that picked up the Ligue 1 title in 2009-10 and three successive Coupes de la Ligue between 2010 and 2012.

He appeared in 17 Ligue 1 games this season, 16 of which he started, but lukewarm displays before Christmas saw him slip out of Elie Baup's thinking, and with Togo international Alaixys Romao arriving while Kabore was on African Nations Cup duty to stiffen competition for midfield places still further, he was deemed surplus to requirements.

"The club wishes to thank the international midfielder for his professionalism and his irreproachable attitude, which he has shown throughout the five seasons spent at Marseille," a Marseille statement read.

Kabore reportedly almost left OM for Real Zaragoza during the January transfer window only for the deadline day deal with the Spanish outfit to fall through.
