Rose blow for Sunderland

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has confirmed that defender Danny Rose is set to be out for several weeks after suffering a fresh hamstring injury.

Rose, 22, has been in stellar form since joining on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, but he suffered a another injury to his hamstring during the club's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal earlier this month.

"Danny's likely to be a few more weeks," O'Neill told the Sunderland Echo.

Spurs have asked to assess the player themselves, O'Neill said.

"I think it's less severe than the previous hamstring problem but, because he's on loan, Tottenham Hotspur get involved as well and they want to assess him," he said. "That's quite right - he's their player and they like to see what's happening.

"He'll come back to us on Monday. It's one of the drawbacks to having loan players. The parent club feel as if they have got a call for him. I can't disagree with that. Let's say anything happens to Connor Wickham (on loan at Sheffield Wednesday) - we'd want to assess him ourselves."

Sunderland have made no secret of their desire to secure a permanent deal for Rose but, while the defender has indicated he may be interested in remaining on Wearside, Spurs coach Andre Villas-Boas said in December that such an agreement was "impossible".
