Match-fixing suspect detained in Milan

The Italian authorities have detained a suspected match-fixer for questioning at Milan airport on Thursday morning upon his arrival from Singapore.

Slovenian citizen Admir Suljic, allegedly an associate of match-fixing suspect Tan Seet Eng, was met by police in Milan following a tip-off from Singapore authorities.

Speaking at a conference on tackling match-fixing in Kuala Lumpur earlier on Thursday, Interpol chief Ronald Noble had announced the plan to meet the suspect at the airport.

"The man is wanted by the Italian authorities for his alleged involvement in match-fixing under the organisation based in Singapore and controlled by Tan Seet Eng," he said.

Italy's Polizia di Stato met the suspect at the airport soon afterwards.

Italian police have issued a warrant for Tan's arrest amid accusations that he heads an organisation that fixes matches across the globe.

The issue of match-fixing has been in the news again recently following European police agency Europol's announcement that a joint inquiry between itself and national authorities had identified around 380 matches in Europe, and another 300 globally, as suspicious.

On Tuesday, the Thai Football Association announced it had begun an investigation into claims that November's Thai FA Cup final was the subject of attempted match-fixing.
