Cagliari to play behind closed doors

This weekend's Serie A fixture between Cagliari and Torino will be played behind closed doors at the controversial Is Arenas stadium.

Cagliari's new home requires a new safety certificate to be issued for every game as the club struggle to bring it in line with legal standards and the local council have decreed it unsafe for fans in its current state.

Club president Massimo Cellino - along with the local mayor and a public works commissioner - was arrested last week, accused of fraud during the construction of the stadium, and is currently in prison as he awaits sentencing.

The stadium could yet be torn down as it is deemed an illegal structure, so getting a certificate for this weekend could be extremely difficult. Cagliari moved to the Is Arenas ahead of the current season after failing to attain certain guarantees from the council over their previous home, the Stadio Sant'Elia.

The move has been beset with problems and the Sardinian club were forced to play Atalanta behind closed doors on the opening day of the season, while their game against Roma was postponed and then later awarded as a 3-0 win to the Giallorossi.

December's 3-1 home defeat Juventus had to be held in Parma, while last weekend's 1-1 draw with Milan was initially switched to Turin before the club won an appeal. Seeing the situation, Cagliari have agreed with the Lega Serie A to play the game against Torino at the Is Arenas behind closed doors.
