Ex-boss in dark as Celta appoint Resino

Struggling La Liga side Celta Vigo have appointed Abel Resino as their new coach - apparently without telling his predecessor, Paco Herrera, that he had been sacked.

Herrera's departure had been widely predicted after Saturday's limp 3-1 defeat at Getafe, and Resino was known to be travelling to Vigo on Monday to meet Celta president Carlos Mourino.

Celta finally released a statement on Monday in which they confirmed that former Atletico Madrid and Granada boss Resino, 53, had been appointed and thanked Herrera for his work since taking charge in 2010, when Celta were in the Segunda Division.

"Real Club Celta has concluded contract negotiations for Abel Resino to become first team coach," the statement said.

"The coach from La Mancha takes over on the celeste bench from Paco Herrera, to whom the club wishes to transmit its thanks for his great work in recent seasons and the unforgettable promotion achieved last season."

However, it seemed nobody thought to contact Herrera personally to break the news.

"Nobody from the club has called me," he told Spanish news agency EFE. "After almost three years I believe that, out of respect, they should have told me something."

Celta are currently 18th in the Primera Liga, four points from safety. Earlier in the season, they had won plaudits for their attractive, attacking style, but a run of two points from five games lead to a feeling that change was necessary.

Resino has reportedly agreed a deal that initially runs until the end of the season, and renews automatically should he keep the Galicians in the top flight.

The former Atletico and Rayo Vallecano goalkeeper's last management job was at Granada last season, when he took charge in January and led the club to survival on the final day. He has also coached Levante, Atletico and Real Valladolid.

Celta's next game is at home to Granada on Sunday before they take on Sevilla away and Real Madrid at home in a tough beginning for their new boss.
