Shenhua lose title due to match-fixing

Shanghai Shenhua have been stripped of a league title and hit by a points deduction for next season due to their part in the match-fixing scandal in China.

Super League club Shenhua, who have recently lost star duo Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka to clubs back in Europe, were fined £100,000 and deducted six points for next season after they were found guilty of fixing a match in their 2003 league-winning campaign. The Chinese Football Association (CFA) have said the club will lose their title from that season as a result.

Two former Chinese football chiefs have also been banned for life after they were jailed in June for taking bribes.

Nan Yong, the former head of Chinese football, was sentenced to ten-and-a-half years for accepting more than 1.48 million yuan (£153,150), while his predecessor Xie Yalong received the same sentence and was also fined £21,000.

Overall, 58 people have been punished by the CFA discipline commission as part of a three-year long push to clean up corruption in the game.

Former CFA deputy head Yang Yimin and World Cup referee Lu Jun - once hailed as China's "Golden Whistle" - were among 33 people banned from football for life.

Four ex-Chinese national team players - Shen Si, Qi Hong, Jiang Jin and Li Ming - were all jailed for up to six years in June for match-fixing and were also handed life bans.
