Arteta: We can't afford slow start

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta believes the Gunners have been guilty of showing the bigger clubs too much respect and is determined to put things right against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

• Blog: Workmanlike Bayern

Arsene Wenger's men have come up short in the early stages of the clashes against both Manchester clubs and Chelsea in the Premier League this season, and Arteta says they need to change their mindset ahead of the Champions League clash with Bayern at Emirates Stadium.

"The last few big games, we miss the first 20 to 25 minutes and have given the opposition too much respect," Arteta said on Monday. "We want to put that down tomorrow and face a different scenario. We want to go into this game and show we want to win it.

"If you score first in these big games, you have a better chance to win it. That is a pure statistics thing. We know what we have to do when we face them right from the off.

"The difference in the Premier League table from the first 45 minutes to the second 45 minutes would be very different. That tells us that our quality is very good. When the teams tire a little bit, we show what we are able to do. It also tells us maybe we are not ready from the start and that is what we have to do tomorrow."

Arteta went on to stress that Saturday's FA Cup defeat to Blackburn will have no effect on Tuesday's Champions League last-16 tie against Bayern as the excitement of this fixture will ensure Arsenal are focused on their next task.

"This is one of those games that everyone is ready to play," he added. "It is a real pleasure to play for this great club and we believe we have a big chance (against Bayern). We are facing a very good team, but we are a very good team also. We can't wait for this game to come.

"It gives you extra motivation when you are playing against top players and a top club. You want to see how good you are playing against them. We have a great test tomorrow and we have to face that test with maximum desire and the positive feeling we have around the squad. We want to get out and win it."
