Roar defeat Phoenix 2-0

Brisbane Roar are back within touching distance of the A-League's top-six after grabbing a 2-0 victory over the Wellington Phoenix at Suncorp Stadium.

The two-time reigning champions have had a season to forget so far, a change of manager and squad upheaval sending the Roar sliding down the ladder.

And earlier this week, the club was knocked out of the Asian Champions League qualifier - controversially having their automatic entry spot taken away by the Asian confederacy - succumbing to Thailand's Buriram United in a penalty shoot-out.

But Sunday's win lifts some of the gloom hanging over the club, pushing the Roar up into seventh on the table and to within two points of a finals spot, and a chance to claim a historic treble.

The Wellington Phoenix have now lost two in a row and are rooted to the bottom of the table.

Both teams were finding it difficult to find any fluency on the cut-up Suncorp pitch in the first-half, but the home side made the most of its best moment as a neat passing movement between Ben Halloran, Thomas Broich and Shane Stefanutto led to Steve Lustica firing the ball past Phoenix goalkeeper Glen Moss just past the 30-minute mark.

And the Suncorp faithful did not have to wait long to celebrate a second goal after the half-time break, last year's golden boot winner Besart Berisha clinically firing home after the Phoenix defence had its pocket picked by young midfielder Luke Brattan.

Both teams wasted further chances to add to the score-line as the Roar held on for a much needed three-points.
