Son targets World Cup selection

South Korea striker Heung-min Son insists he will use this year's World Cup qualifiers to stake his claim for a place in the national team for Brazil 2014.

Son, 20, has scored nine goals for Bundesliga side Hamburg this season and has placed himself in strong contention for next year's World Cup.

Although he is yet to become an established member of Choi Kanh-Hee's first-team line-up, Son is hopeful of making an impression in the next 12 months.

"The World Cup in Brazil is my main aim and my hope. I've still got a little over a year to keep improving in order to represent my country there," Son told

"The atmosphere at the ground, the weather and the way people breathe football is impressive. I'll give everything to be able to play there. I'm still young and have a lot to learn. The coach decides when he thinks it's right to play me."

South Korea currently sit second in their qualification group, although Son believes it is a reflection of the strength in Asia rather than a failure on his side's part.

"The other countries have developed well in the last few years. Even if Lebanon or Uzbekistan are almost unheard of here in Europe, they're very good and we can't take them for granted," he said.

"We still have three home games to play and with our fans behind us we want to win every game. That's why I'm confident and have the belief that we'll get through in the end."
