Stoke eyeing up Birmingham's Davies

Stoke manager Tony Pulis will continue to monitor Birmingham's Curtis Davies as a potential summer transfer target after confirming that Matthew Upson will not be handed a new contract at the end of the season.

• Blog: Give pace a chance

The Potters boss was unsuccessful in a bid to sign centre-back Davies in January, but is likely to stage another attempt this summer.

And with Upson scheduled to leave the Britannia at the end of the season, Pulis needs cover for Ryan Shawcross and Robert Huth.

Davies will enter the final year of his contract at St Andrews next season, and the Championship club remain in a difficult financial position as owner Carson Yeung continues to seek a buyer.

Pulis will look to trim his squad at the end of the current campaign with the likes of Wilson Palacios, Thomas Sorensen and Upson all likely to move on.

Upson is currently on loan at Brighton and the Stoke boss has said he will be allowed to depart when his contract expires in the summer. The 33-year-old has made only 11 league starts in his 18 months in the Potteries.

"Matty is at Brighton to get himself a contract," Pulis said. "He hasn't played as much for us as he would have wanted, but he has been brilliant for us."

Sorensen has a year left on his contract, but his future is in doubt following Stoke's £3.5 million signing of Jack Butland from Birmingham and he plans to hold talks with Pulis in the near future.

Dean Whitehead's contract is up at the end of this season, but the Potters may offer the midfielder a new deal.

"He is one of those that, the closer we get to the end of the season, we will hopefully discuss things," Pulis explained.
