Villa recovering from stomach operation

Barcelona striker David Villa is to spend the weekend resting at home after undergoing a stomach operation and spending two separate overnight spells in hospital.

Villa, 31, initially entered hospital on Monday, having complained of abdominal pain, and had a kidney stone removed.

The procedure appeared to have been a success, but he was readmitted for observation on Thursday after reportedly feeling further pain.

A Barca statement, released on Friday, confirmed that the Spain international had been released from hospital but would miss the La Liga game at Granada on Saturday.

The statement read: "David Villa went into Hospital de Barcelona for the second time this week, given the persistence of the pain caused by the renal colic from which he is suffering, and for further monitoring of his condition.

"He was released on Friday, but will not be available to play against Granada. The Asturian first went into hospital on Monday due to the abdominal pain known as renal colic and was initially released on Tuesday."

Villa was able to train alone in the gym on Friday while his team-mates - including the returning Xavi Hernandez - were being put through their paces outside.

However, he must now be a serious doubt for the Catalan club's Champions League last 16 first leg match at AC Milan on Wednesday.

Villa's season appeared to be finally coming together after he completed only his second full 90 minutes in La Liga this term when scoring in the 6-1 rout of Getafe last Sunday.

He had previously been linked with a move away from the Camp Nou in January after being unable to regain a regular place in the Blaugrana starting XI since returning from nine months out with a broken leg last autumn.
