Milito injury mars Inter victory

Diego Milito looks set to face another lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury during Inter's 2-0 Europa League win over CFR Cluj on Thursday.

Milito, 33, only returned to action on Sunday after a month-long absence due to injury, netting a vital goal in the 3-1 victory over Chievo which marked the eighth different game he had scored in this term, all ending in Inter wins.

He had missed over a month of action but just six minutes into the game against Cluj, he was left writhing in pain having planted his studs in the turf and then twisting his knee as he fell to the ground.

Milito, who has scored nine goals in twenty league appearances this season, was carried off in tears before being taken to a Milanese hospital where he was evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon. Coach Andrea Stramaccioni appeared to confirm the worst when speaking to reporters after the match.

"Unfortunately, this injury rather ruined the night," he said. "It is a lesion to the anterior cruciate ligament, damage to the collateral ligament and capsule. It is a terrible injury and totally new compared to the problems he had in the past.

"There's a one per cent chance of this happening, but it happened to Diego. We now just need to know when he'll have the operation. It's awful news, as we all care for him as a person as well as a player. I am personally very close to him and feel so sad right now."

Inter's city rivals AC Milan extended their sympathies to the striker, who devastating form helped the Nerazzurri to a league, cup and Champions League treble in 2010.

"AC Milan is close to the great champion Diego Milito for the injury suffered yesterday night," the club said via their official Twitter account on Friday morning. "Get well soon Diego!"
