Villa taken back into hospital

David Villa has been readmitted to hospital for observation due to further abdominal pain and is certain to miss Barcelona's La Liga game at Granada on Saturday, the club have confirmed.

Villa first entered hospital to deal with the problem on Monday, and had a kidney stone removed. The procedure appeared to have been a success and he had been due to return to training on Wednesday after leaving hospital.

However, the player sat out that session after reportedly feeling further pain in the affected area, and a club statement released on Thursday morning said Villa was back in hospital and would not be able to play this weekend.

"The club's medical services have explained that Villa has been readmitted to the Hospital of Barcelona due to the persistence of the pain caused by the renal colic he is suffering, to keep him under observation," the statement said. "He has been ruled out of Saturday's league game against Granada. Villa was taken into hospital on Monday for the same condition, but after receiving treatment he was sent home on Tuesday."

Villa, 31, completed just his second full 90 minutes for Barca in La Liga this season when scoring in the 6-1 rout of Getafe last Sunday lunchtime.

Besides missing Saturday evening's away game against Granada, who are stuck in the relegation battle but did beat Real Madrid 1-0 two weeks ago, the striker must now be a serious doubt for his side's Champions League last-16 first leg in Milan next Wednesday.

Spain's record all-time goalscorer, Villa was linked with a move away from the Nou Camp in January as he has been unable to regain a regular place in the Blaugrana starting XI since returning from nine months out with a broken leg at the start of the current season.
