Mourinho blames Ramos for United goal

Jose Mourinho has criticised Sergio Ramos, saying the Real Madrid defender's slack marking was to blame for Danny Welbeck's goal for Manchester United at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

• Payne: On a knife edge
• Hunter: De Gea master class
• Train: Fingertips in Bernabeu
• Brewin: Unsung heroes

Although Cristiano Ronaldo headed home to leave the Champions League last-16 first leg deadlocked at 1-1, Mourinho was infuriated by the defending that allowed the visitors to go in front.

Madrid have conceded regularly from dead-ball situations over the last 18 months, with the coach repeatedly blaming individual errors from players.

Speaking to reporters after the game, he said it was pointless spending hours on the training ground if individual players did not do their jobs during games.

"If you see it on the television, you can see what happened," he said. "We train, we organise ourselves, we give each player a job, we watch videos of the opponent to know their strong points at dead balls.

"But when you lose your individual battle, organisation does not matter. They scored in their first attack, and the game changed."

Mourinho's criticism recalled a training ground row revealed by Marca in 2011, in which the coach blamed Ramos for not following instructions to pick up Carles Puyol at a corner, allowing the Barcelona defender to head home in a Copa del Rey win.

The Spain international reportedly responded by saying that Mourinho did not understand what had happened in the incident because he had never played the game.

Ramos, Madrid captain against United with Iker Casillas injured, said he should not have allowed Welbeck to get away from him and head Wayne Rooney's corner home from eight yards.

"He got the better of me," the defender said. "It was not a corner in the first place, that is certain, but the margin of error in the Champions League is tiny.

"We are happy with the attitude, but not happy with the result. We will go to Old Trafford to win, and that is where it will be decided. We are up against a great opponent, and we must give them the maximum respect."

Mourinho predicted that United would attack more when playing in front of their own fans, and said his men could take advantage of that.

"We had enough chances to score more than one goal," he said. "We had the initiative for the whole game.

"They played very deep, with a lot of people in front of their penalty area, especially in the second half. I am not criticising, that is their game - they got the result they wanted."
