Watzke douses Lewandowski rumours

Borussia Dortmund general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke has moved to douse speculation star striker Robert Lewandowski could soon be on his way out of the club.

Robert Lewandowski's future has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks
Borussia Dortmund general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke says the club doesn't need to sell Lewandowski.

Lewandowski has long been linked with a move away from the club, European heavyweights Manchester United and Bayern Munich the leading contenders to land the Polish international.

Recently, former Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus claimed Lewandowski will join the runaway Bundesliga leaders, comments the striker was forced to deny.

But a defiant Watzke refused to indulge in the rumours, maintaining Dortmund was in a strong position to keep the 24-year-old.

"There are no enquiries," Watzke told ZDF. "However, I'm aware of the interest in the player, which is normal (considering his quality). We're in a good situation and we're not forced to sell players.

"When the offers come, we will talk to Robert, but there's a good chance he decides to stay with us. We are playing Champions League and have a good chance to qualify again for next season, I just don't see the necessity to let go any players."

And despite Lewandowski again being thrown in the shop window after scoring in Dortmund’s 2-2 draw with Shaktar Donetsk in the Champions League, both club and player are towing the same line.

"For now I'm still a Borussia Dortmund player,” Lewandowski stated.
