Everton's Barkley returns from Leeds loan

Ross Barkley has returned to parent club Everton after his loan spell at Championship side Leeds came to an end.

Toffees boss David Moyes sent the 19-year-old midfielder to Elland Road on January 11 in the hope of getting him regular first-team football.

But while Barkley was involved in each of Leeds' first four league games during his spell at the club, starting three of them, Leeds boss Neil Warnock opted not to extend his loan as he could not guarantee the player regular game time.

Barkley did not figure in Warnock's squad for Tuesday night's 1-0 Championship defeat at Middlesbrough, and he is now back on Merseyside.

"I spoke to David Moyes at Everton. He wants him to play and I couldn't guarantee him that," Warnock told Leeds' official website.

"He's done well, he's a smashing player, but he needs to play games and I can't guarantee that."

Barkley, who has played 12 times for Everton's first team, had just over two months on loan at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the season, making 13 appearances and scoring four goals.
