Gomez will stay and fight for place

Mario Gomez has no plans to quit Bayern Munich, his agent Uli Ferber has told Sport Bild.

After rumours linking Borussia Dortmund forward Robert Lewandowski with a summer switch to Bayern Munich grew stronger last week, talk of Gomez moving on have gained momentum.

"Mario will play for FC Bayern next season," Ferber said. "Not for no reason have we extended his contract at Bayern for the long term until 2016. Mario has positioned himself clearly and feels great here."

Speaking to Sport 1 on Tuesday, Ferber said his client would not run away from competition for places:  "Mario feels great at Munich and does not fear any competition. He is at a very, very good club and wants to win trophies with this team.

"Mario has always taken on competition. No matter if it was during his time at VfB [Stuttgart], at Bayern or in the national team."

At the weekend, against Schalke 04, Gomez scored only his third goal of the season after missing most of the first half of the campaign due to ankle surgery in August. Speaking after the match, Gomez said: "I don't see me leaving, I am here. Even if five forwards had been signed last summer, it would not be a problem. I don't fear anyone and I don't have the worry that I will land somewhere else."

The game against Schalke was Gomez's first Bundesliga start in 2013 and he faces tough competition from Croatia international Mario Mandzukic. Alongside Lewandowski and Leverkusen's Stefan Kiessling, Mandzukic tops the Bundesliga scoring charts with 14 goals.

Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer told Sport Bild: "In the media, Lewandowski has been an issue for a long time now. We will not comment on the 'speculation bubbles', as Mr Watzke [the Dortmund CEO] has put it."
