Lewandowski banned for three matches

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed they will appeal against the three-match ban handed to star striker Robert Lewandowski for his red card against Hamburg at the weekend.

Lewandowski is set to miss Bundesliga games against Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Monchengladbach and Hannover 96 after he was sent off following an altercation during Saturday's 4-1 defeat at home to Hamburg. The ban does not apply for the DFB-Pokal match at Bayern Munich on February 27.

Dortmund immediately announced they will appeal the ruling by the German federation's disciplinary commission. "We consider this suspension too harsh and are going to ask for a hearing," Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said.

Lewandowski was sent off after a foul against Per Skjelbred, with Dutch star Rafael van der Vaart later claiming he got the Poland international sent off by "kicking up a fuss".

Speaking to the press ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash at Shakhtar Donetsk, Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp said: "Between yellow and three games there is quite a margin and we could talk about that."

Meanwhile, rumours of Lewandowski leaving the club this summer continue to circulate. The 24-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Bayern Munich at the end of the season and, according to his agent, had two major offers for his services last summer.

"It is true that two clubs were strongly interested in Robert," Cezary Kucharski told Polish website natmat.pl. "The first club was Manchester United and the second one was Bayern Munich. But Robert is in a situation where he can choose the club he signs for.

"Naturally, I know more than you, but I will not comment on any rumours."
