'Avalanche' wipes out WC2014 stadium

Controversy has hit one of the stadiums hosting the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, just over a year out from the start of the competition.

The Arena do Gremio stadium has been forced to close one of its stands for the next round of the Copa Libertadores after a number of spectators were left injured following what is collectively known as the 'avalanche' - a rush to the front of the terrace to celebrate a goal.

During Gremio's 1-0 win over Liga Deportivo Universitaria in the same competition last month, fans re-enacted the 'avalanche' following Elano's match winner, forcing a fence to collapse and a number of spectators crashed into the ditch separating the pitch from the stands.

"Gremio must close the north side of the stadium where the avalanche took place in the next match," The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) wrote on its website.

"Furthermore, the stadium will be automatically closed (for one or more games) if any other similar problem takes place in the next two years."

Gremio will also have to pay $US35,000 to the Conmebol.
