Andreazzoli puzzled by penalty miss

Aurelio Andreazzoli says he does not know what led to Pablo Osvaldo missing a crucial penalty for Roma during their 3-1 loss to Sampdoria on Sunday.

Osvaldo, 27, had a chance to bring the Giallorossi back into the game when they trailed by only a single goal in the 69th minute. It was a surprise to see the striker step up to take the kick given that Francesco Totti - himself prolific from the spot - was still on the field.

Stand-in coach Andreazzoli was unclear why the captain did not take the kick but said that he did not believe that the miss altered the outcome of the game.

"Who is the designated penalty taker? For the last 20 years it has been Totti, so I'd assume him!" he told Sky Italia shortly after the full-time whistle. "I cannot tell you why Osvaldo took the penalty. I haven't had a chance to ask him. Perhaps they had discussed it between themselves, I don't know.

"In any case, the whole match doesn't boil down to this one incident. We played very well and I am satisfied with the performance, as the lads did everything I asked of them."

Later, Osvaldo told Roma's official TV station that he actually asked Totti if he could take the penalty, which was subsequently saved by Sampdoria keeper Sergio Romero.

"I wanted to take the responsibility of the penalty so I could help the team," he said. "I felt ready to take it.

"This has been a difficult week for everyone, I am very disappointed, but we have to look forward. Now everyone will turn their backs on me, but I go forward."
