Gremio sign Andre Santos on loan

Following the signing of left-back Nacho Monreal from Malaga, Andre Santos has signed for Gremio on loan from Arsenal.

Arsenal defender Andre Santos has completed his move to Gremio, on loan until the end of the season.

Santos, 29, arrived at the Emirates from Fenerbahce for £6.8million in August 2011. However, the Brazil international has struggled to win down a first-team place during his time at the club, and the deadline-day arrival of Nacho Monreal has left him surplus to requirements.

A statement on the Arsenal website read: "After finding first-team opportunities limited this term, Santos now returns to Brazil’s Serie A - the Brasileirao - for more regular first-team football. Everyone wishes Andre well for his time with the Tricolor."

News first broke of Santos' move when a picture of the defender being greeted by fans upon his arrival in Brazil was posted on Twitter.

Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski has also shed light on the move, wishing the former Corinthians man good luck for the next chapter of his career on his Twitter account.

He said: "@Andre_santos27 We will miss you man, I wish u all the very best £Gunner God bless you.''

Gremio turned to Santos to solve their ongoing left-back problem, after failing in their attempts at signing Sporting Lisbon's Emiliano Insua, who decided to join Atletico Madrid instead.
