Bayern surge 15 points clear

David Alaba scored twice as Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to 15 points with an impressive 4-0 thrashing of struggling Schalke.

• Schaaf: Schalke Null Vier, anyone?

Alaba opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 19th minute and then made it 3-0 at the start of the second half after Bastian Schweinsteiger had doubled Bayern's lead with a free-kick.

Mario Gomez completed the rout in the 63rd minute as Bayern further strengthened their grip on top spot. Schalke, meanwhile, remain stuck in mid-table after recording just one victory in their last 11 league matches.

Borussia Dortmund missed the chance to put pressure on leaders Bayern Munich after crashing to a shock 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Hamburg.

Robert Lewandowski put the hosts ahead in the 17th minute but within quarter-of-an-hour Dortmund found themselves trailing 2-1 and down to 10 men with Lewandowski the man dismissed.

The numbers were evened up in the 59th minute when Jeffrey Bruma was handed his marching orders but Dortmund could not take advantage as further goals from Son Heung-min and Artjoms Rudnevs - both scoring for the second time in the match - earned Hamburg the victory.

Bayer Leverkusen missed the chance to go second as Patrick Herrmann grabbed a late 3-3 draw for Borussia Monchengladbach.

Gladbach twice pulled ahead through Martin Stranzl and Luuk de Jong in the 44th and 58th minutes but Leverkusen equalised through Sidney Sam in the 52nd minute and Stefan Kiessling on the hour.

Andre Schurrle gave Leverkusen the lead for the first time in the 64th minute only to see Herrmann equalise for Gladbach four minutes from time.

Leverkusen moved to 38 points, one behind second-placed Dortmund, while Gladbach inched up to 30 in the fight for European qualification.

Eintracht Frankfurt also passed up the opportunity to move level with Dortmund as they were held to a 0-0 home draw by Nurnberg.

The hosts advanced to 37 points to remain in fourth place, while the visitors advanced to 25 points - nine clear of the relegation zone.

Mehmet Ekici scored twice at Stuttgart to help Werder Bremen win 4-1 and secure back-to-back Bundesliga victories for the first time this season.

Ekici's first goal in the 34th minute was cancelled out by Ibrahima Traore in the 50th minute. But Aaron Hunt restored Bremen's lead before Ekici added his second in the 74th and Kevin de Bruyne sealed maters in in stoppage time.

The result boosted the visitors' hopes of qualifying for the Europa League, lifting them three points clear of Stuttgart after inflicting a fifth straight loss on the hosts.

Mame Biram Diouf's early goal was the difference as Hannover picked up an uninspiring 1-0 victory at home to Hoffenheim to remain in the running for the European places.

Diouf scored the game's only goal in the eighth minute to give some respite to Hannover, who had lost three of their last four matches but now improve to 29 points. Hoffenheim remain in the heart of a relegation fight with 16 points, after just one win in their last 11 matches.

Bottom club Greuther Furth remain winless at home this season after going down 1-0 a first-half Bas Dost goal against Wolfsburg.

Dost scored the only goal of the goal in the 23rd minute as Wolfsburg eased their relegation worries with a win that lifts them out of the bottom four. Furth, meanwhile, continue to prop up the standings with 12 points.
